Here at Floor Coverings International, we love bringing you insight and perspectives from designers. Today, we have an interview with Rhoda Vickers, a decorator and host of the Southern Hospitality blog.
Floor Coverings International: Hello Rhoda, and thank you for the opportunity to write about you and your work. Could you share a little bit about yourself?
Rhoda Vickers: I live in metro Atlanta, GA, am single and bought a fixer-upper house in April of 2012 that my dad and I renovated in 6 mos. I’m a fulltime blogger and have been blogging for 7 years. It’s been the most fun journey and has completely changed my life.
FCI: What inspired you to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
RV: I started blogging in early 2007 just as a hobby and way of connecting on the internet with others who love home and projects as much as I do. I had been hanging out online for years before that, part of decorating forums before blogs became so mainstream. I had no idea at the time that this blog would turn into my fulltime business and take me to places I never dreamed I’d go. I love the connection with other bloggers and all the friends I’ve met all over the country. That’s the best part of blogging, those connections and friendships. I love meeting up with my blog friends, we have so much in common that other people don’t understand if they are not part of the blogging community.
FCI: What do you like about DIY? Why do you choose to ‘do it yourself’?
RV: I have always been a do-it-yourselfer from a young age. My dad was a handyman around the house, so I learned from him to try to do things myself and not hire out every little thing that needs to be done in a home. The more you learn how to do things yourself, the more money you will save. So, I’ve always jumped into projects and tried them, even if I didn’t know how to do it. Now you can learn so much online on how to do projects so most any information is at your fingertips now. Home/DIY bloggers really do encourage folks to try things themselves and be proud of the efforts.
FCI: What are some of your design inspirations?
RV: I still love magazines and of course, blogs are full of great inspiration. There are countless ways these days to be inspired about a room or project. In fact, blogs have so much inspiration that it can sometimes be overload on what you want to achieve in your own home. So, sometimes I have to put on blinders so as not to get sucked into too many directions. The visual stimulation online these days can be overwhelming.
FCI: Tell me about one of your favorite projects.
RV: I have so many favorite projects, so it’s hard to narrow it down to one, but I’d say my current kitchen renovation is one that I’m most proud of. We gutted that 1979 kitchen and made it over with Ikea cabinets and it really turned out great. I got a feature in Better Homes and Gardens Makeovers magazine which came out in Spring of this year and that was a real highlight for me to be published in one of my favorite magazines.
